How many things does a person have to know in order to live and die a happy, contented, fulfilled life? According to the second question of the Heidelberg Catechism, he needs to know only three: one, how great are my miseries and sin; two, how I can be delivered from my misery and sin; and three, how I am to be thankful to God for such deliverance.
When Paul wrote the word "therefore," he was not just giving a general glimpse of the 315 verses of Romans 1-11, but he was specifically explaining man's complete ruin in sin (romans1-3) and God's perfect remedy in Christ (Romans 4-11). Knowing what we were and what we are because of what God has done should impact the way we live each day.
